In 1914 Franz Ferdinand and his wife were visiting the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. When Bosnian revolutionary named Gavrilo Princip open their car and shot them both to death. Princip was in nationalist group named the "Black Hand ." The Austro-Hungarian government blamed serbia for the attack and wanted revenge. Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to the Serbian government. On July 28 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On August 1 Germany declared war on Russia. Two days later, it declared war on France. World war 1 had begun. Germany launched a massive invasion on France, hoping to knock the french out of the war. the Germans had a problem, they couldn't cross over Belgium when the could crossed Britain declared war on Germany. France,Russia,and Great Britain formed the back bone of the Allies along with Italy (joined in 1915). The Triple Entente. The Central Powers had greater success on the Eastern Front. German and Austro-Hungarian forces stopped the russian attack and went tot the offensive. Russia suffered 2 million killed, wounded, or captured in 1915 alone, but it kept fighting.
