President Roosevelt fell into the presure from the African Ametican leaders, so he told the army to put African Americans in combat. The first African American air force unit was created in 1941, the 99th Pursuit Squadron. The pilots trained in Tuskegee, Alabama, therefore they became known as the Tuskegee Airmen. In 1943, Colonel Benjamin Davis sent the Pursuit Squadron to the Mediterranean and they helped o win the battle of Anzio in Italy. Colonel Davis took over 3 new squadrons that trained in Tuskegee, the 332nd Fighter Group. The group flew over 200 missions and did not lose a single member. African American soldiers started to play a role in the Army as well, and though the military did not end all the segregation the roles of the African Americans were very much expanded, so much as were women's role in the army too.
