After Kennedy's military service as commander, during World War II in the South Pacific , his aspirations turned political. Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States after defeating Richard Nixon. Today Kennedy is the first and only catholic and Irish American president. Also in October 1943, Kennedy took command of Motor Torpedo Boat PT-59 which was converted from a torpedo boat to a gunboat.
