On April 9, 1856, General Lee surrenders to General Grant. in addition to the fact that that the US would not prosecute confederate soldiers for treason, Grant allowed them to keep their horses "to put in a crop to carry themselves and their families through the next winter." Lee said that this great kindness would do much to help consolidate his people.
