The Election of 1928
Calvin Coolidge tried to run for reeletion in 1928, but the republicans decided to nominate his secretary of commerce, Herbert Hoover. The democrates chose Alfred E. Smith, (four time governer of New York). Smith was the first Roman catholic to win a nomination for president. His beliefs were a campaign issue. Hoover won Smith by more then 6 million votes and won the electoral college in a landslide, 444 to 87.
