Nine students were required to be admitted to an all white school in Arkansas to start the integration of schools. These students met much opposition as the governor of the state ordered the National Guard to stop the students. Mobs surrounded the school often, even hurting nearby reporters. Elizabeth Eckford said this about her ordeal with being blockaded at the school, "they moved closer and closer". "Somebody started yelling"' I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the crowd — someone who maybe could help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me."
