Construction of the Berlin Wall
Construction of the Berlin Wall
With tensions rising between the soviet union and the allies, the Berlin Wall began construction in August in 1961. East Berliners, before the wall was put up, traveled back and forth between the two areas to access entertainment. The wall was put up to stop Berliners in the East soviet controlled region to escape to the West owned by England, France, and America. It was also built to keep East Berlin separate with the rest of the world. Barbed wire was set up as a border between the two areas, and the wall was constantly under surveillance. This however did not stop people from escaping. It is believed that 500 were able to make it across the wall while an estimated 100 were shot trying to cross the wall. The Berlin wall was renovated many times until 1975 when the wall sturdy enough to keep people in or out.
