A SEGREGATED ARMY

At the beginning of the war, White soldiers did not train alongside African-American soldiers. In fact, African Americans had completely separate barracks, bathrooms, mess halls, and recreational facilities. After they completed training, the were put into their own military units but were usually commanded by a white general. Most African Americans were assigned to construction and supply units because they were not wanted to be a part of combat.
