A Disputed Election
In the Presidential Election Campain in 1824 Thomas Jefferson head the popular vote but did not get enough electoral votes. Henry Clay was the speaker of the house and was in favor of John Quincy Adams. When Adams won he made Clay his Secretary of State. Jefferson was outraged and called fowl play on Adams and Clay but no evidence could be shown. Jefferson and his supporters then broke off to form the Democratic party.
